Obafemi Onashile FNIQS RQS, a past President of the Nigeria Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) has been elected as the President of the newly inaugurated 10th Board of the Quantity Surveyors Registration Board of Nigeria (QSRBN).
In a Press Release issued by the Registrar, QS Abdullahi U. Alkali FNIQS, QS Onashile was unanimously elected by the newly inaugurated members of the Board shortly after their Inauguration by the Honourable Minister of Housing and Urban Development Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa FNIA in Abuja, a couple of weeks ago. The Inauguration ceremony also had in attendance the Honourable Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Engr. Gwarzo and the Permanent Secretary, Sir Marcus Ogunbiyi
The QSRBN established by Decree 31 of 1986 and subsequently made an Act of the National Assembly under the Laws of The Federation of Nigeria 2004, is the statutory Agency of The Federal Government of Nigeria responsible for the regulation of the training and practice of quantity surveying services in Nigeria. It is the body that certifies persons (individual or corporate) who can practice quantity surveying in Nigeria.
The Board by virtue of the Act is saddled with establishing and maintaining a Register of those who are qualified to practice and be addressed as Quantity Surveyors in Nigeria. By virtue of clause of 9 of the QSRBN Act, the Board is responsible for determining what constitutes relevant training to become a registered quantity surveyor and to as well approve educational institutions (i.e Universities and Polytechnics) locally and abroad that have convincingly demonstrated adequate capacity to teach the quantity surveying course efficiently.
In fulfilling its mandate of maintaining a Register of quantity surveyors in Nigeria, the Act gives power to the Board to investigate and discipline any quantity surveyor that have been proven to have erred in unethical behaviors or involved in misconducts unbecoming of a registered quantity surveyor. Depending on the gravity of the proven misconduct or offense, the Board has the power to direct the striking out of the name of such a quantity surveyor from the Register of quantity surveyors in Nigeria.
Onashile a graduate of quantity surveying from the University of Ife, Ile-Ife, (now Obafemi Awolowo University) and a holder of master’s degree in project management (MPM) from University of Lagos, is an erudite quantity surveyor in private consultancy business and brings a wealth of close to 40 years experience to the QSRBN. He is a qualified project manager, Construction Contract Arbitrator and a Transaction Advisory specialist for Public Private Partnership Infrastructure Concessions.
Apart from Onashile, members of the newly inaugurated Board are QS Abubakar Garba Gengle FNIQS a Managing Partner in private practice who was elected as Vice President of the Board; QS Samuel Temitope Pemi FNIQS a Director in the Federal Ministry ; QS Patrick Theophilus Edem MNIQS a Retired Director ; QS Oribu Monday Georgewill MNIQS a proprietor in construction development; QS Dr. Fatima Muhammad Bello MNIQS, a Senior Lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University; QS Dr. Aminu Muhammad Bashir FNIQS, the Deputy President NIQS; QS Bamidele Mafimidiwo FNIQS, the Vice President NIQS; and QS Priscilla Akabudike FNIQS a director in an Oil & Gas Services firm.
Others include QS Bede Nnana Ejiekwu MNIQS a Managing Partner in private practice; QS Anas Mohammed Adamu FNIQS Chief Executive of a Construction company; QS Prof. Joshua Oluwasuji Dada FNIQS Vice Dean Obafemi Awolowo University; QS Chief Brendan Ofoegbu MNIQS Dean, Abia State Polytechnic Aba; QS Dr Kasimu Alhaji Mohammed MNIQS a Chief Lecturer, Federal Polytechnic Bida and QS Idris Gambo Abdullahi MNIQS a Director, Kaduna State University.
